We Provide Training For The Real World
Invest in the Future of Yourself - Invest in the Future of Your Staff - Invest in the Future of Your Business
There are real and tangible reasons why you should invest in training for your employees including:
• Improved skills available to your business
• Meet regulatory requirements, industrial awards and enterprise agreements
• Increase your competitive edge and profitability.
Supporting your employees to enhance their skills and qualifications means that everyone benefits: your employees, your business and our economy. The right training can improve your business offering, keep you up-to-date and make it easier for your business to adapt to change. It is important to know when training is needed, what type of training is best for your business and how your staff are most likely to benefit from training.
From the many training options available, employers identify vocational qualifications as a sound investment providing a range of positive returns. Current research shows that over 50% of employers use vocational training to develop specific job-related skills for their employees, with over 80% highly satisfied with the VET system as a way of meeting their businesses skills needs.
Improve the skills available to your business:
No business can remain static. It is important that every business keeps pace with changing market conditions and technology.
Skills training will help your business produce a better product or service, increase the flexibility of your staff to perform a range of tasks, reduce overheads through, for example, the more efficient use of existing facilities and increase your capacity to adapt to new technology.
Training helps to link the people who have the right technical skills and business competencies with the roles they are best able to perform. To ensure you receive an appropriate return on your investment, skills training needs to be targeted to employees so they are able to use their skills for your business.
Ensure your business meets regulatory requirements:
Compliance with external and internal award requirements is vital to your business. Over 45% of Australian employers recognise they have jobs that require vocational training to meet these requirements.
In a complex business environment, the right employee training will enable you to meet your obligations and ensure that your business is maintaining professional and industry standards.
Increase the competitive capacity of your business:
Skills training helps you to improve the quality of your product and keep you at the forefront of your industry. While there are many factors that combine to make your business more competitive, skills training can assist with:
• creating a culture of innovation;
• improving staff retention rates;
• improving internal communications;
• minimising downtime;
• reinforcing the values of your business; and
• succession planning.
Maximising the benefits of training:
To maximise the benefits of your investment in training:
1. Ensure employees participate in appropriate training
2. Use a range of skill development training approaches to allow new skills to be utilized in the workplace
3. Provide support for your employees through mentoring, coaching and training information
4. Make sure language and literacy training forms part of other training
5. Provide a mix of general and job-specific training
6. Provide training at a time and in a way that meets business and employee needs.
Training: the return on your investment
Investing in training your employees is investing in the future of your business. The return on your investment can take many forms including:
• improved business performance
• a greater skill level in your employees
• greater capacity for innovation
• reduced overheads
• increased flexibility amongst employees who can perform a range of tasks.
While formal vocational training is very important for local business, it is important to understand that training also includes training delivered in-house as well as online training.
The training challenge:
Many businesses find it difficult to determine whether the training they have provided their employees has benefited either the businesses or the employees.
Individuals want to know whether the time and the money they have spent in pursuing a certain qualification or skill will deliver them better opportunities for advancement while businesses need to know whether training has led to better workplace performance, competitiveness and occupational health and safety.
The challenge is for businesses to implement a considered approach to training, which comprises an audit of their training needs, assisting their employees to find the appropriate training and an evaluation of the returns.
The return on investment:
There is an increasing amount of research into the returns on the training investment made by local businesses and many researchers found that returns can vary between 30 per cent and 7000 per cent*. The key factors, according to the research, are:
1. Returns on training investments are generally positive and can be very high. The highest rates of return depend on the type of training program and its relevance to the business
2. Immediate returns are highest when the training is focused on a particular need of the business
3. Measuring returns is not always easy particularly for businesses with intangible products such as service industries
4. Training supports other changes in the business especially in relation to the introduction of new technologies
5. Training returns can be complemented by other human resources policies which support employee retention.
How do I measure my return on investment?
A recommended procedure for evaluating and analysing returns to training comprises the following steps:
1. Collect data – to measure performance, measure training, identify costs and benefits of training
2. Analyse your business before and after training
3. Try to determine if change is due to training and/or other factors
4. Identify if your business’ strategic objectives have been or are being achieved.
Some helpful hints:
Also remember that the returns from training may not appear immediately or in the short term but over a considerable period of time.
1. Take a broad view when assessing an employee’s performance after training and steer clear of evaluating based entirely on the supervisor’s subjective evaluations
2. Try to avoid drawing general conclusions from a small sample
3. Consider nominating all employees for training regardless of their performance levels.
4. Employees may also benefit by not being aware they are being monitored and employers should consider this on a case by case basis
5. Ensure all employees are part of the Training Plan and ensure your Training Plan is aligned to your Business Plan
6. Train for the future, not just for today
7. Remember to invest in yourself.
